Voice 1:
"You don't want to get in Matt's way," other Moms told me
when they talked about the playground bully. Our scrawny seven
year old, Peter, seemed to be a particular target.
Then one day Peter comes home with an injury from Matt
and a note from school about the incident. He goes straight to his
room and listens to a song called, "I can make peace where I go."
He listens quite a while. The next day he goes straight up to Matt
and says, "Why are you being mean when I'm trying to be a friend?"
Well, things didn't get better immediately, but there was
definite improvement, and this year Matt has almost
become a friend. As I got to know his mother, I learned that
only recently Matt had found out who his father was, and that he was
in prison. seven year old, Peter, seemed to be a particular target.
Voice 2:
Peter shows us a different way to peace. When someone at work
or in the family is hard to get along with, what if we asked,
"Why are you being mean when I'm trying to be your friend?"
